On November 28 the Village of Canal Flats council met for a regular council meeting.
Canal Flats Community Society’s Shawn Doherty presented three ideas for new recreation in the community.
The first was a basic outdoor rink near the existing arena. Doherty said it would give children and families a place to skate on weekends if the arena is booked. He suggested village staff may be able to assist with maintenance and an existing firepit could be installed nearby.
The other ideas suggested were a skatepark or splash park to be built on the same grounds.
Council unanimously agreed to direct village staff to investigate the possibility of flooding an area near the arena to create a skating surface. Specifically, they requested more information on liability and costs.
Council also asked Doherty to provide them with information on if the community has expressed interest and if any community members would be open to volunteering time to maintain the rink.
Council received staff reports from the fire chief as well as the parks and public works departments. Reports outlined ongoing work conducted by staff members.
A resolution to waive the arena rental fee for a Dec. 23. Skate with Santa event at the Canal Flats Arena passed unanimously.
Finally, council unanimously agreed to support a grant application for the village to apply for up to $200,000 in funding from the UBCM Community Resiliency Investment 2023 Community Funding and Supports program. If successful, funding could be used for a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan, hiring a FireSmart Coordinator in the community, training, public education and more.
